“From the Earth To the Moon” HBO series

It took me a while, but I finally finished the marvelous HBO miniseries created by Tom Hanks entitled “From the Earth To the Moon.” When this TV program was first aired in 1998, I was never home at night and missed this 17 Emmy nominated production comprised of 12 hour long programs, each with a slightly different cast of fine actors and a specific topic concerning human voyages from the earth to the moon.

Some of the dramatizations contained images that were indelibly burned into my memory such as Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the moon, but other stories were revelations to me. The space program at its inception was an all-male club, but Sally Fields directing one of the episodes, highlights the wives of the astronauts. Almost all of those marriages ended in divorce. Watching these episodes demonstrated to me how space travel almost always trumped any of these men’s personal lives. My final thought was of thanks to Hanks for producing and writing such a labor of love for generations to come.
