“Hero,” a new musical at Lincolnshire Marriott

If you like new musicals that make you laugh and cry, you may want to make the trek to The Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire for “Hero,” a new musical written by Michael Mahler and Aaron Thielen. As a disclaimer, Mr. Mahler is a friend and colleague, but I can tell you unabashedly that this show is the real deal. The songs are tuneful and inventive, the lyrics well-crafted and clever; the book by Mr. Thielen presents believable characters in an engaging plot. Set predominantly in a comic book store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the main characters are two couples that reminded me of Sky Masterson, Sarah Brown, Nathan Detroit and Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls.” Certainly Dara Cameron (Mahler’s wife) and Alex Goodrich bring down the house as the comedic supporting couple. Heidi Kettenring turns in another wonderful performance and Erich Bergen is the sexiest “nerd” this side of Clark Kent. The rest of the acting ensemble is top notch with a crack pit band led by Mahler.
