Wallander, the new most popular detective

We have had love affairs with Inspector Poirot, Miss Marple and Colombo, among others, but the new darling of the detective set is Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander. Leave it to the Scandinavians to be the masters of crime fiction and television right now. As much as I love Kenneth Branagh as Wallander in the American series shown on PBS, I am even more enamored of a Swedish version with the rumpled Krister Henriksson now finally available on Netflix streaming. Unfortunately, only Season Two is available, so one has to imagine what transpired in Season One. I am on the lookout for another well-reviewed Swedish series starring Rolf Lassgard as the taciturn Wallander. Having just finished one of Henning Mankell’s books, “The Fifth Woman,” I can say that I am part of the fan club for Scandinavian underworld depictions whether they be written or filmed.
