Girl Spies on TV via streaming

When “Alias” was being broadcast on ABC from 2001 to 2006, I was consciously avoiding ever watching it. For some reason, it just didn’t seem like my kind of show. Boy, was I wrong. Thanks to Netflix, I have been able to watch all five seasons with a star-studded cast topped with Jennifer Garner. Show regulars Victor Garber, Ron Rifkin, Michael Vartan and Bradley Cooper are all wonderful, but the recurring guest roles are also astounding, including Faye Dunaway, Gina Torres, Amy Irving, Isabella Rossellini, Lena Olin, Sonia Braga and Angela Bassett, to name a few.

Another surprisingly good “girl spy show” is “Covert Affairs,” Seasons 1, 2 and 3 available for free if you are an Amazon Prime member. They hook you on the series and then have you pay $1.99 per episode for season 4, currently being broadcast on the USA Network. Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham head the talented cast.

My third contender for top female spy is “Nikita,” starring the amazing Maggie Q in a series on The CW since 2010. Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix and Season 3 can be streamed on Amazon Video for $1.99 per episode or $39.99 for the entire season. A shortened  6 episode Season 4 will commence in November 2013. The TV series is based on a great 1990 French/Italian flick called “La Femme Nikita.”

The formula for all three is the same: cast an appealing female lead who can seriously kick ass, surround her with entertaining co-workers, menace her with genuine baddies and throw in the occasional plot twist about who the good and bad guys or girls are. Very satisfying entertainment indeed.
