Page-Turner: The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair

Imagine a cross between “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” and “Gone Girl” and you have “The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair,” a murder mystery, an international best-seller and a bang-up page turner written by 29-year-old Joel Dicker. Originally written in French, Dicker who is Swiss has set his novel in Somerset, Massachusetts in the good old U.S. of A. The author not only aces the crime procedural, but he captures the cultural landscape having spent 25 summers in New England.

The two main characters are both writers, Harry Quebert in the twilight of his career and the other, Marcus Goldman, his student and friend. Quebert is accused of murder which brings Goldman back to prove his mentor’s innocence. To add to the plot, the younger author has a bad case of writer’s block on his sophomore effort after hitting a home run on his debut novel. The book is punctuated with “Harry Quebert’s 31 Rules” for being a writer. Dicker has no such curse, “The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair” being his phenomenally successful second book.

“The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair” by Joel Dicker, published by Penguin Books.
